Een van beste rootsbands aan deze kant van de Atlantic. Dit
gerenommeerde driemanschap doet over de grens al jaren meer oren
spitsen dan hier achter de dijken, met vaste zangeres Miss Mary Ann of
als begeleidingsgroep van Amerikaanse country- en
rockabillygrootheden. Op hun tweede instrumentale album waaieren ze
verder uit qua stijl, van western swing tot surf en latin-getinte
klanken met castagnetten - te veel moois om op te noemen. Naast
veertien originelen wordt met Thunder Reef van The Shindings een
saluut gebracht aan Bobby Fuller. Een keur aan gastmuzikanten geeft 15
Smoking Tracks nog meer luister, met accordeon, steelgitaar, trompet,
tenorsax en mandoline. The Ragtime Wranglers zouden met gemak een film
van zowel Tarantino als David Lynch een gepaste soundtrack kunnen
geven. Zo veel klasse hebben ze. Vinylfanaten, wees er snel bij: de
eerste lichting elpees gaat vergezeld van een 7-inch voor nop. Laat
die kans niet in rook opgaan.

(HOME BREW/SONIC RENDEZVOUS) Het Rotterdamse rootsrock-trio Ragtime
Wranglers treedt meestal op met zangers Miss Mary-Ann,
maar speelt soms ook puur instrumentaal. Dit is het tweede album waarop
dat instrumentale repertoire is vastgelegd. Geholpen door enkele
gastmuzikanten (waaronder jazz-beroemdheid Benjamin Herman)
wordt een veelkleurig palet neergezet, van surfy rockers tot scherpe
rockabilly, en van porch-style countryshuffle tot mariachi-geïnspireerde
woestijnmuziek.
Waar de Wranglers vooral in excelleren is de variatie van hun sound:
elk nummer heeft een passende klankkleur meegekregen. Het stevig in de
50s en 60s gewortelde resultaat is steeds stijlvol en bewijst dat je
echt geen zang nodig hebt om boeiende rock’n’roll te maken. Lodewijk

Let’s
start from the basis that the dutch Ragtime Wranglers have a past in
which they built up a reputation of excellent musicianship (and they
still are, of course): by the early ‘90s they have been the band
linked to The Ranch Girls and, once this adventure was finished, they
kept playing with Miss Mary Ann.
In 2005 their first proper album was released, with the anticipation of
two 45s (one of which with Hardrock Gunter), titled “Groove A Tune”:
a totally instrumental disc, that showed the skills of composition of
the Rotterdam’s trio.
I can say that I have listened that record more than 20 times, and all
this in one year, since I’d put my hands on the LP in Germany about
two years ago: for my personal taste, I decided that the record deserved
a score around 9, less two tracks that didn’t meet my preferences.
“15 Smokin’ Tracks” was officially premiered in a place called
RoTown, in Rotterdam, on July 12th, although this record saw
the light in mid April: 15 instrumental where guitar is Quen (note for
Joe: I suspect that guitar usually is “male” in English, anyway is
“female” in Italy), being almost all tracks written by Joe Sixpack,
guitar virtuoso of the band.
The start comes with “Harissa”, real sonic fist in the stomach with
a surf feel, track that sees the presence of a caressingly angry
saxophone, then the album goes on with “Firewater Stomp”, built
around a “Kaw Liga”-esque atmosphere.
To be more precise, the beginning four tracks are screamingly good: what
is between the grooves also is a certain sound consistence, massive but
very valve-alike; do not believe, anyway, to be in front of a “lo-fi recording-that’s-so-cool-today”, no.
The warm and somewhat circular sound is one of the strength points here,
I shall say.
Between the tracks, “Sin City
Serenade”, “Resaca”
(with a strongly sexy vocal by Miss
Mary Ann), mexical-alike “Amor
Perdido”, the fantastic “The
Chicken Room” and the adrenalinic “Thunder
Reef” (the only song not penned by the band, but a past hit by
Bobby Fuller Four) deserve a citation.
The feeling I have listening to this record is that we are in front of
guys that made of ‘50s and ‘60s music a consolidated genre but still
in exploration: nonetheless I thought to certain experimentations Eddie
Cochran used to do in the studio back in the ‘50s (“Scratching”,
i.e.).
I think Ragtime Wranglers have this “adult” vision of the thing, and
it’s rare (pretty rare) to meet musical ideas that build something
original on parallel fields of the genres in examination, that are surf,
rockabilly and country bop, preserving in full their characteristics and
giving, also, new breakthroughs without slowing down in campy things:
proof of this is that “15 Smoking Tracks” is a records we could
listen to a large number of times, pretty rare stuff with many other
records if you think about it.
Package of CD is tri-fold digipak, with shots of the Wranglers’ faces,
and the back sleeve has all the details you need to know about the
tracks and who played in (between the guest musicians, “Lucky Star”
Jeremy Wakefield at the steel guitar, trumpeter Joe Rivera and Miss Mary
Ann, who guested vocals on “Resaca”), and a note by Mary Ann about
the record itself.
This
means that you won’t find any booklet in it: unnecessary, since you
don’t have lyrics to write down…
A vinyl version on LP (180g) also exists, in limited quantities of 500
units, and the first 250 copies comes with a free 7”.
Needless to say that, for better enjoy the sound of this work (and all
the rest of recorded music, though), it’s strongly recommended the
original support (CD/LP): MP3s cut many frequencies (yes, 320Kbps ones
too…) and give a second-rate listening experience, a thing that this
record doesn’t deserves at all.

The Ragtime Wranglers genieten
hier te lande vooral bekendheid als het geweldige orkestje achter de
al even geweldige rock & roll-diva Miss Mary Ann. Maar eigenlijk
doe je Jelle “Joe Sixpack” van Atten (gitaren), Sietse Heslinga
(drums en percussie) en Huey Moon (bas) flink tekort door hen enkel op
die begeleidende rol vast te pinnen. Dat bewezen ze in het verleden
ondermeer al met “Groove a Tune”, een collectie sublieme
instrumentaaltjes. Een plaat, die met “15 Smoking Tracks”
eindelijk een vervolgstuk krijgt. En ook daarop is het weer volle bak
prijs! Vijftien stomende opnames inderdaad weer, waarbij variatie
andermaal troef blijkt. Van recht-toe-recht-aan rockend spul als het
door Benjamin Herman van rillingen bezorgend tenorsaxwerk voorziene
“Harissa”, “Red Rod Race” of “Thunder Reef” tot bezwerende
instro-hillbilly genre “Firewater Stomp”, van een verleidelijke
Latin touch in “Resaca” tot een Mariachi feel in “Amor Perdido”,
van een speels country-niemendalletje (“The Sky’s Gone Out”) tot
een stevige rockabilly boogie (“Mojo Bag Bop”), van een
nadrukkelijk naar de sixties hunkerende gitaarinstrumental (“The
Mexican Standout”) tot een wel aan de surfscène besteed knallertje
(“Drivin’ All Night”), zelfs een wiegeliedje (“Lullaby For
Louis”), het kan hier voortdurend echt alle kanten op. En precies
dat maakt van “15 Smoking Tracks” wat ons betreft de geweldige
plaat, die het is. Dat en uiteraard ook de aparte retrosfeer, die
ervan uitgaat.

Tweede
CD van The Ragtime Wranglers, en dat werd tijd want hun solodebuut
Groove A Tune dateert ondertussen ook al van 2005. Met ‘solo’
bedoelen we uiteraard zonder Miss Mary Ann, en dat de heren ook zonder
haar hun, euh, mannetje staan bewijzen ze veelvuldig tijdens optredens
zonder hun frontvrouw. Tja, je moet iéts doen als je zangeres naar
Engeland verhuist, maar je moet natuurlijk wel van goeden huize zijn om
instrumentaal een uur lang te kunnen blijven boeien. The Ragtime
Wranglers zijn al 20 jaar goed: welke andere Nederlandse band kan zeggen
dat ze de vaste begeleiders zijn van ‘50s artiesten van het kaliber
Collins Kids? The Barnstompers, ja, die kunnen dat ook zeggen van Sid
King en Lew Williams, maar dan hebben we het zo wel ongeveer gehad.
15 Smoking Tracks is volledig instrumentaal en bevat 14 originals van de
hand van gitarist Joe Sixpack + één cover, in tegenstelling tot Groove
A Tune waar de verhouding zowat 50-50 was. Het muzikale spectrum dat de
nieuwe CD bestrijkt gaat breder dan Groove A Tune, want naast de
rockabilly die we associëren met The Ragtime Wranglers worden hier
diverse andere en minder voor de hand liggende stijlen omarmd. De CD had
eigenlijk net zo goed “Variaties Op Een Thema” kunnen heten, want
dat is exact wat de Rotterdammers hier doen: hun kijk presenteren op
traditionele instrumentale thema’s. Opener Harissa is surf met
oosterse en Arabische invloeden, waarbij de gitaar (of correcter
gitaren, want op de hele CD heeft Joe Sixpack zich overgedubd) worden
vergezeld door een vrolijke tenorsax (Benjamin Herman, bandleader van
New Cool Collective en ooit nog bij De Gigantjes) die mee de melodielijn
toetert. Red Rod Race is een surfy hot rod instro in Del-Fi stijl (maar
dan met contrabas) compleet met de sounds van scheurende race cars.
Driving All Night combineert surf met de sound van Britse early ‘60s
instrumentals die ook opduikt in Buck ‘n’ Rich, een eerbetoon aan
Buck Owens gitarist Don Rich gekoppeld aan de Sleepwalk-achtige
non-pedal steel gitaar van Jeremy Wakefield (niet alleen een van de
beste muzikanten uit Los Angeles maar ook de man achter de Spongebob
geluidjes), maar dan uptempo. Ook de enige cover is surf, Thunder Reef
uit 1965 van The Bobby Fuller Four onder de naam The Shindigs (en
volgens ons net hetzelfde nummer als Thunder van Bob Taylor & the
Counts uit 1958 waarop de latere BFF gitarist Jim Reese piano speelde).
Indianen instrumentals krijgen we met Firewater Stomp (op Kawliga leest
gestoeld met opnieuw steel), Mojo Bag Bop is hun take op bluesbop rifs,
Resaca is een trage sleazy stripper met sax waarin Miss Mary Ann
haarzelve twee keer op bijzonder zwoele wijze de titel uitspreekt. The
Sky’s Gone Out is een sobere melancholische semi-akoestische Chet
Atkins-stijl fingerpicker met extra mandoline (Jeroen Jongsma die
opduikt in elke rootsband waarin zijn instrument getolereerd wordt,
eerder was ie al te horen bij The Ranch Girls), en ook het reflectieve
Lullaby For Louis is een dromerige fingerpick melodie. Helemaal ver van
het Ragtime Wranglers bed zijn filmische nummers als de trage Mexicaanse
western surf (denk Ennio Morricone) Sin City Serenade met klapratel,
accordeon (Gabriel Gort) die klinkt als een mondharmonica, en een jazzy
trompet (Joe Rivera van New Cool Collective, hij toerde in het verleden
met het Glenn Miller Orchestra door Europa en Japan) die naar mijn
bescheiden mening niet echt veel toevoegt aan het nummer. Amor Perdido
koppelt die tegendraadse spaghetti surf en jazzy trompet dan weer aan
Latino klanken. Niet wat je verwacht van The Ragtime Wranglers, maar het
is uitstekend uitgevoerd en werkt wel degelijk. Meer typische Ragtime
Wranglers horen we in de Del-Fi-achtige chicken picker The Chicken Room
(op ska ritme), de stroller op een 12 maten bluesschema The Mexican
Standoff (met pistoolschoten), en het Mosrite gitaar + mandoline duet
Smoke ‘Em Out in de traditie van de gitaarduels van Joe Maphis &
Larry Collins, maar dan met bluegrass invloed. U merkt aan deze
opsomming dat we hier heel andere Ragtime Wranglers horen dan we gewoon
zijn, als het ware een nieuwe maar zeker niet onaangename kennismaking
met een band die duidelijk nog niet het achterste van zijn tong heeft
laten zien en horen. Dat het geheel uitermate strak is opgenomen en
kristalhelder klinkt hoeft geen betoog.
Ik lees dat er ook een op 500 stuks gelimiteerde 180 gram vinyl versie
te koop is, en dat de eerste 250 stuks daarvan vergezeld gaan van een
extra vinyl single. Overigens kan je – als je slim bent – deze CD
helemaal gratis bemachtigen! 15 Smoking Tracks wordt namelijk aan pers
en publiek voorgesteld op 12 juni (Pinksteren) in Rotown in Rotterdam, mét
gastmuzikanten Benjamin Herman en Joe Rivera, en DJ James uit Californië
complementeert daar het feestje. En het mooie is dat alle kaarthouders
(een kaartje kost 10 €) op de avond zelf een gratis exemplaar van 15
Smoking Tracks krijgen. Da’s goedkoper dan de CD achteraf te gaan
kopen, want voor je 10 € krijg je dus de CD én een live optreden van
The Ragtime Wranglers! (Frantic Franky)

Imagine that The Shadows, Peter Berry & The Shake Set, Los
Plantronics, and Dick Dale were backing each other on each other's
songs. All were top-trimmed after many gigs and the joy of playing
together are heard in every note. That is what this album sounds like.
A riot of variety and styles, from hot rod surf, moody and bluesy
parts with smoky saxophone and sometimes accordion, "Kaw-Liga"-rhythms
and spooky country-bending. Oh, and Robert Normann came by too (norwegian
guitargod, Chet Atkins-style), while Huey Moor - last seen in Norway,
with Slim Jim and Darrel Higham on the Wild Bunch Club - slapping
stylish and controlled behind a toyful mandolin, while a series of
horns brings mexican mariachi music to the table.
The basic element in Holland’s The Ragtime Wranglers is rockabilly,
which they for years have proved, among other things as a rock-solid
band for Miss Mary Ann - has written liner notes here - but rockabilly
purists they are not. These are excellent musicians with broad musical
taste, which they refer to all the time on this album. We forgive that
the good; read Brian Setzer, The Ragtime Wranglers, The Seatsniffers,
etc., flirts with other musical styles in between, as long as we know
that their hearts usually beats strongest for rockabilly. As it also
says in the letter accompanying this disc: "Rockabilly style,
that's where we come from."

This is the second all instrumental album for Miss Mary Ann’s
backing band, the Ragtime Wranglers, and if you’re too lazy to read
the full review here’s what you need to know: it’s a killer!
It opens with the surf tinged “ Harissa”, an ode to this
North African sauce with sax. I couldn’t help but think it would
make a fantastic double-sider with Los Straitjackets’ “ Casbah”.
With the intro played on the tom-tom, “ Firewater Stomp”
carries an Indian mood (a bit like Kaw-Liga) and features the one and
only Jeremy Wakefield on steel guitar. Next is “ Thunder Reef”,
the sole cover of the album (from the pen of Bobby Fuller): a solid
rocking and surfing number with great drums break. “ Red Rod Race”
is a rockabilly track that comes complete with car sounds and would
have made Bob Keane, boss of Del-Fi, happy. Pictures of desert,
setting sun and such other things come to mind while listening to “ Sin
City Serenade”, a cool atmospheric tune with accordion and muted
Mexican trumpet. “ Resaca” (hangover in Spanish) has a kind
of film noir groove with a Latin beat and a superb tenor saxophone
part. And don’t forget Miss Mary-Ann contribution on vocals. If
Tarantino doesn’t pick this one for his next movie he’s a dumbass.
“ The Sky’s Gone Out” is simply perfect or perfect in its
simplicity with just the acoustic guitar, a double bass and a mandolin.
More Latin fever with “ Amor Perdido” which is a mix of
twang guitar and mariachi trumpet. How could you resist? Mojo Bag
Bop is a rockin’ blues that’ll remind you of John Lee Hooker’s
Boogie Chillun with a rockabilly beat. If good, The Mexican Standoff
is not very original. More interesting is “ Drivin’ All Night”
that makes good use of the reverb. “ Lullaby For Louis”
follows. It’s a gentle waltz that sees the return of the accordion
in the background. They couldn’t have done it nice, Louis is a lucky
baby. Wakefield returns on “ Buck’n’Rich”, a tribute to
Buck Owens and Don Rich ‘and incidentally a tribute to the good old
Fender Telecaster). “ The Chicken Room” sounds like Link
Wray (Run Chicken Run) meets the Ventures. “ Smoke ‘em Out”
closes the album with Joe Sixpack in full Larry Collins/Joe Maphis
mode (don’t forget they’ve backed the Collins Kids many times)
duelling with Jeroen Jongsma on mandolin.
Icing on the cake, this album comes in a beautifully designed digipack.
Pleasure for the ears, beauty for the eyes.

Samen vormen zij The Ragtime Wranglers en er is een grote kans dat je
deze drie Rotterdamse rockabilly-musketiers wel eens bent tegen
gekomen op een podium in binnen- of buitenland. Er is overigens nog
een grotere kans dat je enigszins werd afgeleid door de charmante
frontvrouw Miss Mary Ann die daarbij de zangpartijen voor haar
rekening nam. Echter, na het eerste instrumentale album Groove A
Tune hebben The Ragtime Wranglers het nogmaals aangedurfd om een
compleet album zonder vocalen op te nemen. Het resultaat hiervan zijn 15
Smoking Tracks geworden die het hart van de Surfmuziek-,
Rockabilly- en Rock ’N Roll-liefhebbers sneller doet laten kloppen.
Onder de gastmusici, ook wel ‘Other Smokers’ genoemd vinden we
namen als Benjamin Herman die met zijn tenorsaxophoon Harissa
en Resaca naar een hoger plan blaast. Op die laatste horen we
bovendien Miss Mary Ann in een weliswaar bescheiden maar sensuele
vocale rol. Mooi is ook de bijdrage van gitarist Jeremy Wakefield in
het met country doorspekte Firewater Stomp. Behalve het van
Bobby ‘I Fought The Law’ Fuller gejatte Thunder Reef
is al het materiaal op 15 Smoking Tracks van eigen hand.
De brede orientatie op muzikaal gebied stelt de band in staat op
diverse podia in gezelschap van diverse artiesten, goed uit de voeten
te kunnen. Zo stonden ze onlangs voor de gelegenheid als Raptime
Wranglers geheel onverwachts met de Nederlandse hiphopsensatie Typhoon
op het Oerolfestival en zal zelfs met de legendarische Wanda Jackson
binnenkort het podium van de Haarlemse Patronaat worden gedeeld.
